Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda

Typhoon Haiyan, known as Yolanda in the Philippines, was the second-deadliest Philippine typhoon on record, killing at least 4,011 people in that country alone.

She made landfall on November 8, 2013, causing catastrophic damage to the country. There has not been an exact death toll yet as rescue and relief operations are still ongoing, but it’s expected to reach up to 10,000 according to various sources.

Malapascua is one of several islands that took a major beating from a direct hit, but not much attention was brought to them. Concerned residents and resort owners jumped into action, thus giving birth to the ‘Rebuild Malapascua’ project.
